Sawtooth Wilderness are is fantastic! My 11 year old son and I hiked into the Baron Lakes area last weekend of July 2010. This hike was listed as a 10.5 mile'r but we ended up doing about 25 miles, roundtrip over 3 days & 2 nites. The trail was great! There was one steep, switchback section that we went half way up right at dark then backtracked to a nice camp area at the bottom of the falls by Baron Creek, then proceeded on to Baron lake the next morning. Weather was fantastic! I shot small snipets of digital video on the way up as well as the way back of the two of us. I'm sure he will enjoy it for ever, as I will too!
Our basic gear was adjusted for the nice weather with our biggest improvment needs being the tent. I have been using a "boy-scout" two pole type tent all summer. While it is light, it is small and condensate's pretty bad. we used our Eureka Cheyene's with REI Bivys for added warmth. Night time temps dipped down to between 35 & 40 degrees by the lake but we stayed pretty warm with everything zipped up and wool socks on. Rest of the gear woked great. I pumped water right from the lake. I wore my Columbia Pagora Hybrid shoes the whole trip and they were pretty comfortable untill 3/4 of the way back when I started to get a minor blister. Biggest complaint was the dirty feet everynight. Over all, for 25 miles this was extremely minor. We feasted on 1 MRE each and Mountain House dinners with bagel's and cream cheese + oatmeal breakfasts, various trail mix and granola bars for snacks. We did catch fish but released them, boy is not real fond of them just yet.
